Continue reading »]]> Just about everyone suffers from internal piles at some point in their lives. However, they are not easily observed, they are not necessarily a problem, they normally stay out of view, and they show no symptoms thus most people don’t even realize that they have them.

Typically when someone first notices symptoms of piles, or hemorrhoids (sometimes spelled hemroids), they respond with fear and anxiety.

One day, you’ve got a great looking rear-end that you’re proud to show off in the bedroom. The next, your anus looks like it has it’s insides coming out. The piles may also suddenly start being painful, itching, and just feeling generally irritated like nothing you’ve felt before in your life.

The anxiety can sometimes be tremendous. You see blood on the toilet paper and in the toilet. You are in unbearable pain with extremely irritating itching. And if your piles are thrombosed and they look like some of the pictures in the piles pictures gallery, it can be startling.

In truth, though, hemorrhoids are just inflamed blood vessels that generally respond well to treatment.

Let’s not forget, though, that they are highly embarrassing also. Even if you can get over the anxiety, you’re probably embarrassed. After all, our society thinks of anything to do with bowel movements as being very private and hush-hush. Even having a medical exam by a doctor can be embarrassing. However, physicians are highly trained professionals, particularly in the case of rectal specialists, who have to go through years of post-doctoral training. They are, thus, used to dealing with hemorrhoids and piles and will be very professional.

And it’s even more embarrassing if the hemorrhoids are potentially caused by anal intercourse. Sex is another touchy subject, and combining the two can make for a very uncomfortable conversation with your doctor. The doctor may ask questions of a very personal nature about your sexual habits but they will not ask questions that they do not need to ask for the diagnosis, and they will not (should not) be prejudiced against whatever sexual practices you are engaged in.

But did you know that the issue of piles is so common, and so widely known in the medical community that every doctor, even general practitioners, are experienced and able to perform an outpatient piles surgery. The most common surgeries are rubber band ligation, or injections. Like I said, they can often be performed on an outpatient basis, although the recovery can be somewhat painful when you have a bowel movement. Many factors can contribute to piles. First off, rectal blood veins can react to the tension that comes from being strained. This tension can come from various sources, which can lead to an inflammation of those veins we call this hemorrhoids, or piles.

If you are prone to piles, it can help to be well-informed about all of the different causes behind hemorrhoids. Seriously. Get educated about the disorder, and you can potentially transform your life, and stop suffering. 1)Constipation

One of the leading causes of piles is constipation. When a person is constipated, they tend to sit on the toilet and strain to make a bowel movement. This strain leads to a tension on the blood vessels in the rectal area this makes them engorged, inflamed, and irritated, and causes what we know as piles. If you are constipated, you may initially see the strain as bleeding. This is, of course, due to the blood vessels becoming inflamed and erupting. So you would be behooved to read up on ways to avoid constipation.

2)Pregnancy

Aside from constipation, the second leading cause of piles is pregnancy. This is for several reasons. First, the constant strain on the rectal blood vessels from being overweight and having a baby pushing on the abdominal region can cause irritation. Second, the blood vessels have to do more work due to the fluctuating hormone levels. Again, this can cause irritation and inflammation. When your blood vessels are delicate, they are especially affected by tension, which is compounded by the fact that you will often have to put in additional effort to get out your poop. And if you are prone to this type of damage, then you will be prone to stress from prolonged standing or sitting. In addition, if you are obese, overweight, do not get enough exercise, or you smoke, you are at higher risk for chronic venous insufficiency, and thus at higher risk for piles.

5)IBS

Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBS, is a final major contributor to piles. This is because IBS leads to frequent diarrhea and constipation, as well as other digestive symptoms, which in turn can lead to hemorrhoids from the extra stress and strain on the anal and rectal blood vessels.

If you do suffer from piles, you should look at what is causing them, rather than just trying to treat the symptoms. If you don’t, they are likely to come back. So if you have any other symptoms, such as weight loss, you should definitely see your physician.

How to Minimize Bleeding?

As promised, next we’re going to talk about how to minimize bleeding. Continue reading »]]> I’ve talked about this already to some extent, but after getting some questions from readers, I wanted to revisit some of the basics about piles. Often, a person thinking about piles pictures something rather frightening.

Piles can indeed look frightening, but they are really just enlarged and/or inflamed blood vessels in the rectal cavity. The most common symptoms are usually bleeding, pain and a powerful itch on the rectum or anus. Piles can either be internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids will be just inside the rectum, while external hemorrhoids will be beneath the anal skin. The two types often occur together.

As I said before, some of the most common signs of piles are:

1. Anal bleeding
2. Rectal Irritation and Itching
3. A bulge from the rectum
4. Fecal leakage

You will see evidence of all four of these in the piles pictures galleries elsewhere on this website. Normally, bowel movements are not painful. However, after you have finished using the toilet, you may see bright red blood either in the toilet or on the toilet paper. This is normal and nothing to be alarmed about. There can be a small to moderate amount of blood, although it may look like more as it spreads through the water in the toilet.

In some advanced cases, there may actually be more serious bleeding. In exceedingly serious cases, blood loss from piles may result in anemia, which can lead to weakness or even loss of consciousness. If this happens, seek medical attention immediately.

Even with piles pictures to reference, it is difficult to find the exact origin of your bleeding without seeing a doctor. However, in mild cases, finding the exact source may not be necessary, and you can just go ahead and treat your hemorrhoids or hemroids with a natural or over the counter cure.

While itching can be the most irritating symptom, pain can also develop and be very difficult to deal with as well. Pain is most common with hemorrhoids that have a thrombosis or have coagulated blood drying on them. Pain can occur with either internal or external hemorrhoids or piles. You’ll recognize the external variety from their bulge and their plum color.

Internal coagulated piles can also be very painful, although the pain is usually not as intense as with the external variety. When it does occur, it is usually the result of hemorrhoidal asphyxiation. This occurs when the blood supply to the hemorrhoid is cut off. In rare cases, gangrene can even result, where the affected skin actually dies and rots. This can be sometimes be fatal, and requires urgent surgical intervention.

Some contributing factors to Hemorrhoids and Piles are:

1. Straining on the toilet

2. Suffering frequent constipation or diarrhea

3. Prolonged sitting or standing on a daily basis

4. Being middle-aged or older

5.Pregnancy
6.Pelvic Tumors

Continue reading »]]> Hemorrhoid surgery (hemorrhoidectomy) is generally considered a last resort. Candidates for surgery most often have tried diet adjustments, various medications, and basic lifestyle changes to no avail. Sometimes genetics can get the best of you, and sometimes things have just gotten a little too serious to go back to normalcy.

Furthermore, there are more invasive treatments that are worth considering if the standard methods have not worked. Rubber band ligation, which is most common, works by banding the hemorrhoid in a series that continues over the course of a few weeks. This procedure can be very effective, and is often the preferred option to try before full-blown surgery it is less painful and invasive, has a much shorter recovery time (out patient) and usually has minimal side effects.

Those who are good candidates for surgery are usually in the third or fourth (most severe) stages of piles, and ligation either has not worked completely, or the piles have gotten so bad that time constraints now dictate surgery as being the superior option. You may be able to self-diagnose yourself (not a replacement for a professional medical consultation, however) by browsing hemorrhoids pictures and/or piles pictures using the following guide to determine roughly what stage you are in.

Stage 1 This stage consists of small hemorrhoids, presenting with some pain and perhaps some minor bleeding. Changes in toilet habits and other lifestyle changes are generally recommended and most often serve to lessen symptoms. The sufferer can be any age, but piles are uncommon in children and teens.

Stage 2 In this stage, it’s not uncommon for moderate-sized hemorrhoids to prolapse during straining, but immediately return. Bleeding is sometimes more frequent and more severe. Itching may be present. The sufferer is usually over 30 years of age.

Stage 3 By this stage, hemorrhoids are large and becoming a serious problem. Prolapse (falling out of the anus) is very common, and they may need manual effort to move back into the anal canal. Bleeding and itching are severe and commonplace. Visually, skin tags can appear. Sufferers are often over 40 years of age, and at this point surgery is becoming a viable option.

Stage 4 This is the final and most severe stage. Hemorrhoids are very large, and permanently prolapsed. Bleeding is nearly constant. There is debilitating pain, itching, and general discomfort. Skin tags are most often present. Sufferers are 50+ years old and the need for surgery has become imminent.

Keep in mind that while older persons typically suffer the most severe stages of hemorrhoids, they can become a very serious issue at any age. Genetics and occupational habits may play a part in aggravating piles in younger persons.

Medications or other factors that contribute to low water retention cause stools to become hard and difficult to move. Thus, the excess straining and effort it takes to have a bowel movement can cause the rectal veins to become irritated and inflamed. That said, drinking a lot of fluids, particularly water, can help keep stools soft and easy to move.

Even with proper hydration, stools can still sometimes be too firm. A diet high in fiber (or taking fiber supplements) help to soften the stools so they are easier to pass.

Often accompanying dehydration and hard stools, general straining while trying to have a bowel movement is a huge factor, primarily because of the added pressure that is put upon the veins and nerves of the anus. If you are properly hydrated, but yet have chronic constipation or a tough time defecating, it may behoove you to try a stool softener. These work by helping your body draw water into the stool in the large intestine.

And of course, the aging process causes a gradual loss in tissue elasticity, which is why we see hemorrhoids more commonly and frequently as we get older. Obesity is also considered a contributing factor, compounded by the fact that people also tend to gain weight as they age.

Finally, pregnancy seems to be a primary cause of hemorrhoids, but the reason why is not clear. It is generally assumed that the added weight and pressure of the pregnancy causes stress on the anal canal. Women often complain that even though they are doing all the right things, they still have hemorrhoid troubles when pregnant, but most often these problems abate after delivery.

Internal hemorrhoids generally cause a lot more problem than external hemorrhoids, but both types of piles seem to have the same basic causes. Let’s face it. Hemorrhoids are embarrassing. They occur on a part of our bodies that is not considered to be an appropriate topic for polite conversation. Most people don’t even tell their best friends that they’re suffering. Others hesitate to even mention it to their doctors until they are in a very advanced stage, and are affecting the person’s quality of life. 

Hemorrhoids can affect the way that you sit, the way that you walk, whether you exercise, and whether you engage in activities that are meaningful to you. It’s not worth having your quality of life decline just because you are embarrassed.
